Description
Ellesmere (Llangollen) Canal (SA 3414): 87 yds long with towpath. <1>
Canal tunnel. Circa 1797 to 1801 with minor later alterations on William Jessop's and Thomas Telford's Ellesmere Canal. Red brick with stone coped parapet (heightened in late C20 on west side) terminating in square corner piers with shallow pyramidal caps. Elliptical arch with rusticated stone voussoirs (plus projecting keystone to west side) and flat string course. Approximately 90m long with cast-iron handrail to towpath. This section of the Ellesmere Canal was completed c.1801. The Ellesmere Canal Company amalgamated with the Chester Canal Company in 1813 and became a part of the Shropshire Union in 1846. <2>
