Description

Montgomery Canal (SA 927); A bridge like, brick structure, lined with puddled clay. Its three arches are little more than culverts. <1>

Reported to have been destroyed by 1992. <7>

Its replacement was photographed in 2014. <8>

Noted during a desk-based assessment and walkover survey in 1994, ahead of Phase 2 of the Montgomery Canal restoration. Demolished in 1986. No structural remains of the aqueduct were apparent during walkover survey, although the area was heavily overgrown.<9>

The phase 2 restoration of the canal was monitored during 1995-1996. Apart from a large dump of sandstone rubble, the only remains of the former Perry Aqueduct was a short length of stone wall abutting the outfall of the field drain culvert on the north side of the river. The stone wall had probably formed part of the tail of the eastern face of the aqueduct's northern abutment. The existing steel footbridge over the River Perry was taken down and replaced with the new aqueduct. <10>
