Description

There is some evidence that Caus Castle superseded a nearby pre-conquest settlement, as well as an earlier ringwork, at Hawcocks Mount. (PRN 00250). The latter stands 3/4 mile E of Caus Castle, in a field known in 1361 as Aldescausefield (Old Caus Filed), subsequently corrupted to Hawcocks Field. Hawcocks Mount formerly stood on the main road from Westbury to Montgomery and the ridge and furrow still visible in the field in which the ringwork stands can plausibly be associated with a deserted hamlet <2>

Unit 1: A possible moat of Unknown Medieval date, seen as an earthwork, and mapped from good quality aerial photographs. The site appears as a complete, subcircular enclosure, 55m in diameter, defined by 1 ditch, and is located at SJ 3492 0779. EH Author: CAD Date: 02/08/93

-> Unit 2: A possible mound of Unknown Medieval date, seen as an earthwork, and mapped from good quality aerial photographs. EH Author: CAD Date: 02/08/93 <6>

Photographed during aerial photographic survey in 2008. <7>

During a field visit by Trysor in November 2017, no evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation was noted. The report concludes that aerial photographic and LiDAR evidence of cultivation ridges does not support the presence of medieval ridge and furrow here. LiDAR shows the cultivation ridges to be very narrow and more typical of later post-medieval or even modern ploughing that the broad ridges produced by medieval ploughing techniques. <8>
