Description

The garden [of Whittington Rectory] incorporated a large ditch which appears to have been an adopted feature rather than built as a feature. <1>

Bank and ditch marked on 2nd ed. 1:2,500 OS map. <2>

Earthworks visible on digital vertical aerial photographs.<3>

A programme of archaeological evaluation was undertaken in 2014 on land at the Penrhos Arms, to the west of this site, to investigate a postulated earthwork which had been suggested as being part of the outer defences of Whittington Castle (see PRN 30825). No evidence was recorded of an additional circuitous bank or ditch as documentary evidence had suggested. Given the negative results of the evaluation, the author visited the village green, to assess these earthworks. They suggest an interrelationship between the two but remark that this feature should be considered as a separate entity from the castle defences. <4>

The alignment of this feature as shown on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map (<2>) accords well with the sketch plan of this postulated outer defensive bank from the early 20th century (<6>). The contemporaneity of these two representations might suggest that they were interpreted as part of the same feature at this time. <5>

The ditch on the SE side of the castle (SJ3274 3101) was shown during a field inspection to be a north - facing scarp 2.5m high, the northern side consisting of a mortared stone revetment only 60cms high, with a stone feature projecting into the bottom of the ditch near the east end. The ground to N & S is very level and has been part of the rectory garden. The feature may be merely a piece of landscaping, though the VCH plan, depicting it as part of the castle defences (<6>), is feasible in military terms. I Burrow FI 1977. A measured sketch of the ditch was prepared at 1:200 and a clinometer profile across the ditch was prepared at a scale of 1:100. <7>
