The Bridgewater Foundry or Clay's Iron Foundry was established sometime between 1839 and 1874. What preceded the foundry is unknown but 'timber yard' is assigned to the field on the tithe map of 1839. It produced castings for the canal and for the estate of the Earl of Bridgewater who built most of the commercial premises on the canal wharf. The foundry was extended northwards between 1874 and 1901. The foundry was shut down in the early 20th century as the ploughs it was making could be produced more cheaply in the Black Country. <9>
