Description

Lime Kilns, consisting of five chambers. <1>

Kiln battery not depicted-presumed destroyed. Site occupied by wood. <2><3>

A bank of five limekilns. A wharf and limekilns named on Oswestry (Morton) Tithe map of 1840 [<5>]. A considerable earthwork tump occupies the north-west corner of the wood - it may be a natural feature though the slopes look to have been scarped and it could conceivably disguise the limekilns. <4>

The lime-burning site by Redwith Bridge was one of several such sites positioned along the Shropshire Union Canal. A watching brief on restoration works at Redwith Bridge noted that though a large quantity of stone had been dumped along the south side of the road to support a crane, this did not appear to have impacted on the limekilns. It was not possible to be wholly certain of this, however. <6>

Near main road. Overgrown but traceable. The only surviving Montgomery Canal kilns not directly fed with stone from any adjacent quarries. <7>

Site photographed in 1997; heavily overgrown. <8>
