Description
The Shrewsbury and Birmingham railway line was under construction in 1848 when the Station Bridge was built by Robert Stephenson, assisted by Joseph Locke. The bridge is a stone viaduct having four of its seven arches over the River Severn.
In 1903, the railway line was quadrupled and the Station platforms were extended over the River. This was accomplished by widening the stone viaduct by means of steel girders, the outer edges of the widened deck supported on Pratt truss girders. This widening, which is in two spans, is supported by cast-iron columns in mid-stream. <1>
