HER Number (PRN):30854
Name:Possible medieval trackway, S of Little Ness Castle
Type of Record:Monument
Protected Status:None recorded

Monument Type(s):

  • TRACKWAY (Medieval - 1066 AD? to 1540 AD?)

Summary

A short section of metalled surface was recorded during archaeological evaluation to the south of Little Ness Castle. It was sealed by post medieval rubble. Its similarity to a trackway encountered to the north (PRN 30853) perhaps suggests a similarity in function, forming part of a system of medieval trackways across this area.

Description

A short section of metalled surface was recorded during archaeological evaluation to the south of Little Ness Castle (PRN 01100), carried out by Earthworks Archaeology in 1994. ->

-> The results from Trench 2, towards the south-east corner of the site, were interesting but inconclusive. Again a pebbled surface, similar in character and stratigraphic location to the surface noted in Trench 1 (PRN 30853), was observed to cover the entire area excavated. No datable material was recovered from this surface but it was sealed, on its east side, by stone rubble which quite possibly represents structural demolition datable, tentatively, to the seventeenth century and indicates the likelihood of other structural remains in this general location. Once again, no details regarding the extent, alignment and function of the pebbled surface were forthcoming, though it evidently peters out before it reaches, or perhaps its line avoids, both Trench 3 (to the west) and Trench 1 (to the north). ->

-> Its similarity to a trackway encountered to the north (PRN 30853) perhaps suggests a similarity in function, forming part of a system of medieval trackways across this area. <1>
