Description

The canal bank in front of the warehouse (PRN 17159) and for about 27 metres to the northeast is revetted in stone, probably associated with a wharf. <1>

The phase 2 restoration of the canal was monitored during 1995-1996. This site was recorded as the extensive (if somewhat overgrown) remains of wharfage on the east bank of the canal, north of the former West Felton -Whittington road bridge. Again, clearance of vegetation from the canal edge
revealed that the side of the canal was lined with a stone wall extending northeastwards for a distance of about 70m from the culvert under the road. In front and to the south of the steel warehouse (PRN 17159) the wall was constructed of yellow ashlar sandstone blocks; although somewhat overgrown, the wall above the water-line appeared to be in fair condition, notwithstanding a number of blocks missing from the wall face. <2>
