Description

Gin wheel, now disused. Probably mid to late C19. Roughly coursed and dressed limestone rubble side walls with cylindrical drum to centre. Drum has wooden boarding to rim and cast iron spokes. Chain wrapped around centre is fixed to trolley on short remaining section of track. Formerly associated with the stone quarries on nearby Llanymynech Hill, to which it was connected by an inclined plane <1>

First recorded on SMR 1976 by C Ryan thus: Gin wheel or winch. Restored to some extent by Parish Council. Consists of a large wooden drum or barrel, clad in wooden slats (c6ins wide) originally held together with metal rims (one remaining) connected to the internal support of the drum. (This has been replaced to some extent by the Parish Council). Drum supported of two roughly coursed stone walls. Drum dimensions, c6ft diameter and 8ft in length. Rotates in horizontal plane to operate up-down system of trucks. Limestone lowered to top of limekilns (SA 4428), burnt, removed by canal barge as agricultural lime for farmers along the canal. Inclined plane (NB not listed).Drop of c 100 ft down steep cliff. Somewhat overgrown, now a narrow track, no rails, believed taken up <2>

Noted to be in damaged condition by Montgomery Canal archaeology assessment in 2003 <8>

On the eastern downhill side of the wheel drum was a length of double track to permit two-way working. The course of this length has now been obliterated by the construction of Five Kilns house in the 1980s. <9>
