Description
A group of mine workings mainly to the SW of Shelve Pool and to the E of Old Grit and East Grit Mines (1323)-southern and western extent of workings SO 3310 9779 and SO 3290 9790; northern extent SO 3335 9810. Most of these remains depicted on the recent OS mapping <1><2><3>
-> These and additional workings have been noted during the fieldwork undertaken by the Marches Uplands Survey (MUS 40323 01, 40323 02, 40325 01, 40327 01, 40334 01, 40339 01, 40364 04). This fieldwork extends this group northwards and eastwards-SO 3326 9831 and SO 3390 9798 (50m W of the main complex of Ritton Castle Mine (1326) <4>
-> These workings are known as Shelve Pool Trials in operation during the mid 19th century. The remains of adits, shafts and spoil heaps are noted <5>
-> This mine consisted of little more than trials for lead north and east of Shelve Church [PRN 13698] and produced no significant amounts or ore. The mine consists of an adit which drains into ponds north east of Shelve Church and spoil heap in a field or pastureland. The spoil heap has been robbed of materials and modern rubble has been tipped on and around it. <6>
