Description

Soulton Hall (PRN 12406) is an impressive example of a Carolean house, built in 1668 for Thomas Hill. An 18th-century parapet has replaced the original gabled roof.
In front of the Hall is a walled garden or court with elaborate gate piers (PRN 30615) broadly contemporary with the 1668 house (S. Leighton, Shropshire Houses (1901), 19; N. Pevsner, Shropshire (1958), 290) <1>

Rectangular area to front of balustrade [to PRN 12406] enclosed by red brick walls (mixed bond) on chamfered stone plinth with triangular coping attached to balustrade. Square gate piers to front (PRN 30615) have moulded stone plinths and capping surmounted by ball finials; brick projections to opposing faces with carved scroll-like stone brackets to top. Garden wall attached to left corner of enclosure wall probably also C17. Red brick without plinth and with plain stone coping; C20 stone buttresses to front. Encloses an area of approximately 30 x 50m. <4>
