Description

Component of PRN 10134.
Two-storey L-plan house, built for John Meighen, the headmaster of the Grammar School in 1588-9, dated from documentary evidence and from a cambered tie beam or collar, said to have been removed from the former porch and taken to the Schools site, Kingsland, when Shrewsbury School moved in 1882. Rigg's Hall takes its name from John Rigg, second master from 1861 to 1872. The building was built against the truncated remains of a medieval building, known in the 16th century as Shetton's or Shotton's Place (PRN 62104). Built in the 'Shrewsbury School' carpentry tradition with vine-leaf decoration on barge boards and tie beams, close studding and S-braces; it formerly had a two-storey porch and a probable external stair tower; see listing description and the archaeological report for further details <1><2>
