Description
Watching-brief (site 60076) on the construction of the Charles Darwin Centre in 1987 found a large sub-divided lower basement terraced into the gradient at the rear of 26 Pride Hill. Its side walls were constructed of Keele Beds sandstone rubble, though the lowest courses were of modern brick: it was uncertain whether the structure had been underpinned (more likely), or whether it was of entirely modern construction (less likely). The structure may have been amongst the sandstone-built features reported early in the 20th century (see site 60078) but this cannot be determined from the surviving descriptions [<1>] <2>
