Description
Extramural ditch, excavated in 1993 by the Oxford Archaeological Unit in trench 10 of the St Julian's Friars evaluation (site 60177). The primary silt yielded a 14th-century jeton, upper fills were 18th century. Shallow sloping profile, excavated to c.1.5m below the base of the town wall footings (62395). The town wall itself is likely to have been built in this area by the 1240s, when the gate on St Julian 's Friars was authorised/built. The town ditch could conceivably have pre-dated it by a few years: a Haughmond Cartulary document of c.1221 referring to a curtilage within the moat and another outside it, in the Sub Wila (Under the Wyle) area [<2>] <3>
