Description

Surviving section of the Old Welsh Bridge on the Frankwell bank (site visit, NJB, 1996). It consists of a single semi-circular arch turned in a wall of small Keele Beds ashlar, standing between 1 and 2 metres high. Above the arch is the ramped carriageway surface, terminating to the east at a mass of brickwork. To the west is a southward-projecting abutment, defined by a Keele Beds sandstone wall in bond with the arched section and buttressed at the south-east corner. Only the south face of this monument is visible, the north side being concealed by a higher ground level. ->

-> This is the dry arch reported by A W Ward in 1935, when it was accessed via the 'basement of the adjoining house in 'The Stew', now the Frankwell Antiques Centre [<1>] <2>

See also PRN 01471, particularly for discussions of excavations carried out in association with this surviving section 2005-2007. <3>
