Description

Corridor villa building, part of a large complex of buildings ranged around a courtyard, excavated 1955-62 by W A Silvester and schoolchildren. Mosaic from apse paralleled at Verulamium and there dated 360+ AD <1a><1b>
Extensive remains found earlier <1c>
Dating evidence shows occupation by c200 and pottery of mid C4, also a coin of Constantius II <1d>

Survey of this site began in 1955, when fragments of roof tile plus pot sherds were found. In 1956 a wall at least four courses deep with traces of plaster were identified. In Spring 1957 150 foot of walling was uncovered, outlining a site about 60 yds by 30. In August that year the mosaic floor in "Room III" of the building identified on the S side of the site was completely uncovered and photographed [see <5>], before being covered up again. The other five "Rooms" identified were not as extensively explored. There were further explorations in Spring 1958.<1a> <1b> <5>

Building, possibly of 5 rooms, 30m x 9m. Mosaic flooring found at SJ6061 0089. OS FI 1971 <1>

The main villa building is evident from a pronounced platform. Evidence of excavation is visible on site. EH FMW 1987. <2>

Series of black and white photographs, mounted on card, of the mosaic uncovered during excavation in 1957. <5>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, as one of less than 10 Minor Villas. <7>

A selection of slides from the 1955-62 excavations at Yarchester were scanned and cleaned by P.G & T.G. Hill in 2004. They depict a few finds from the excavations, together with details of the mosaics. <8>

Photographs from 1957 showing the mosaic under excavation. Donated to the HER via Hugh Hannaford. <9>
