Description

Barn, latterly coach house, now outbuilding. Late C17 with mid-to late C18 and C20 alterations. Timber framed with brick nogging on high brick plinth, rebuilt in red brick to north-west and north-east. Plain tile roof. Framing: square panels (3 from sole plate to wall plate) with long straight tension braces. 2 framed bays. Toothed-brick eaves cornice to north-west. North-west front: former coach house to left with pair of large boarded doors and elliptical relieving arch, and pair of inserted C20 large boarded doors to right. 2 small doorways to centre, that to left inserted with wooden lintel and boarded door to right with segmental relieving arch. Right-hand gable end has remains of collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and V-struts, and left-hand gable end has tall blind round-arched panel with brick impost band (raised top-course) and boarded loft door. Rear wall with vents in brick infill panels. Interior not fully inspected. Timber framed cross wall with tension braces noted in left-hand part. This building was formerly one of the outbuildings to The Old Rectory, Claypit Street (qv). The Tithe Barn is not included on this list <1>

In February 2013 a potographic record of the Ice House and barn at the Old Rectory, Whitchurch, was produced. The two elements identified as being of historic interest were a cobbled floor in the north bay of the barn, and the ladder giving access to the first floor. <2>

In July 2010, this building was assessed as part of an environmental impact assessment. When first built, the building would appear to have been a small storage barn for the present Old Rectory’s predecessor on the site. Inspection indicated that the building was in fairly poor and neglected condition. <3>
