Name:Wooden Lifting Bridge at Brickwalls, Ellesmere Canal
Type of Record:Monument
Protected Status:None recorded

Monument Type(s):

Summary

About 2.5 miles south of Whitchurch, on the Ellesmere Canal is a timber lift bridge called Brickwalls Canal Bridge. A overhead gantry lifts the bridge with the assistance of a counterweight when a chain is pulled. As all the timber in the structure has been replaced at fairly frequent intervals it is difficult to establish the date of its origin, though this would probably be soon after 1800, when the canal was built.

Description

This is a timber lift bridge, where an overhead gantry lifts the bridge with the assistance of a counterweight when a chain is pulled. It presumably dates to about 1804 when work on this length of the canal (SA 3414) reached Tilstock Park. The similar Stark's bridge (SA 1009) is more complicated because it crosses the canal at a skew angle. There were 12 such bridges on the Llangollen Canal, of which five are in Shropshire. There are very few wooden lifting bridges left nationally. They are features of narrow canals in flat country <2>

Descheduled 22/01/1998. <7>
