Description

Canal bridge. Circa 1796. By William Jessop and Thomas Telford, engineers. Red brick with coped parapet. Segmental arch with string course and corner piers. This section of the Ellesmere Canal, opened in 1796 to link with the Montgomeryshire Canal at Carreghofa, became part of the Shropshire Union in 1846. Charles Hadfield, The Canals of the West Midlands (1966) pp169-70. <1>

Design and access statement prepared in association with proposed repairs, in 2010. Incorrectly Listed as No 74. <4>

Noted during a desk-based assessment and walkover survey in 1994, ahead of Phase 2 of the Montgomery Canal restoration. Recorded in a fair condition (this bridge was repaired by British Waterways in 1991); the brick revetments to the abutments of the bridge were visible in the canal banks, complete with their cast iron rubbing strakes. A photographic record was recommended during restoration works. <5>

The phase 2 restoration of the canal was monitored during 1995-1996. Work on Corbett's Bridge included repairs to areas of brickwork, the revetment of the canal banks either side of the existing brick approaches with sheet piling, and the replacement of the cast iron fenders with timber ones. Photographed. <6>
