Description

Earthworks in the field of pasture at SO 34139151. There is a ringwork (PRN 01224). The Area to the south west is quite Marshy. A small hollow way (PRN 28593) runs N-S with good platforms either side. The earthworks seem to be on slightly higher ground than the surrounding land. The Village More which is adjacent has a 13th century Church (PRN 13661) [<6>}.->

-> Domesday entry for Stoke St Milborough [Not SStM!! - Lydham] which was assessed at 20 hides must have included the daughter hamlet of More. There is evidence to suggest that More was a post conquest creation, contemporary with the castle and church. It was carved out of the Saxon manor of Lydham (although More was a daughter of Lydbury North) as was granted by Grand Serjeantry in the reign of Henry I. The typography of the DMV suggests that More was created as a unit with the castle at the western end and the church at the east [<7>]->

-> Mansion house and Mill at More in 1295 [<9>]. ->

-> Licence to celebrate Mass in the oratory of his "Mansion house of More" granted to Hugh Cheney in 1368 [<10>]. <0>

Immediately north east of the outer bailey (PRN 01224) is a further enclosure, originally a toft forming part of the medieval village of More. The sub-rectangular enclosure lies south east of the hollow way (PRN 28593), with the hollow way earthworks defining one edge of the enclosure. The enclosure measures approximately 0.6ha internally. This enclosure was a toft forming part of the medieval village of More. A toft contained a series of crofts (peasant houses with yards and gardens) and associated paddocks. The enclosure lies within the Scheduled Area associated with the Motte and Bailey Castle. <21>

Later ridge and furrow earthworks (PRN 28591) have been noted within the enclosure. <25>

…The possible third bailey (the toft enclosure see [<21>]) has no S side where it abuts onto the marshy ground. It could represent an area of settlement within the medieval village but no house platforms are visible. OS FI 1973 <26>

Photographed during aerial survey in 2008-2010. <27>-<31>

Noted during a desk-based assessment of the castle at More, in 2015, as part of the 'Helping Hillforts and Earthwork Castles' project undertaken by the Stiperstones and Corndon Hill Country Landscape Partnership Scheme. Earthworks thought to represent the remains of buildings lie on the south side of this trackway just outside the eastern edge of the outer bailey of the castle. The enclosure measures approximately 0.6ha internally and is thought to represent a toft forming part of the medieval village of More. On the north side of the holloway are earthwork remains of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation (PRN 28591). Included on a hachure plan of the castle site, produced from Ordnance Survey mapping, LiDAR data and recent aerial photography. <32>
