  • Scheduled Ancient Monument 21393-01: FIVE BOWL BARROWS 490M AND 500M NORTH WEST OF BUSSOCK BARN

Description

Group of 2, possibly 3 round barrows. Only `A' in scheduled area. `B' & `C' and two other barrows, SUT 060 & 061 outside area.
January 1998: Scheduled area revised to include all 5 `bowl' barrows (S2). Enclosure earthwork now outside the scheduled area.
1962: `A' - TM 3291 4577, a circular eastern mound, 25m diameter and 0.9m high, with no traces of a ditch. Similar to numerous bowl barrows investigated in Martlesham/ Levington area. In good condition, though obscured by bracken with trees growing on it.
`B' - TM 3290 4579, NNW of and contiguous with `A'. Mound much obscured by dense bracken, about 15m diameter, 0.7m high. No visible ditch. Accurate observation impossible. Not surveyed (S1).
1967: Group of round barrows on a small hill. Labelled `Camp' on OS 6 inch sheet and has traces of a small ditch round it. This though appears to be an C18/C19 addition possibly constructed when the hill was planted with trees. There is one large round barrow `A' 60-70 feet in diameter x 4 feet high. To the NE of this are two smaller ones, `B'(?), 30 feet in diameter x 2 feet high and `C'(?) 45 feet in diameter x 2 feet high (S2). `B' & `C' ? may be SUT 060 & 061.
1977: `A' mound 24m diameter and 1.36m high. Wooded, bracken and 3 old oak trees. Slight traces of a ditch?
`B' mound 13m in diameter and 0.52m high. In clump of oak trees in heathland, also bracken (S3).
Attemps have been made to link these mounds with the nearby place-name 'Bussock' to suggest a fortified place (S4). Seems doubtful on all counts. 1981: Area covered in bracken, two smaller mounds difficult to discern (S2). 1985: Hillock planted with mature oak and sweet chestnut, with undergrowth of bracken, surrounded by an apparently much-silted ditch with slight internal bank which runs just within the edge of the wood, `A' & `B' as 1977, `C' (TM 3289 4580) 11m diameter, 0.75m high (both approximate), bracken covered (S2).
1994: Low bank (circular?) enclosure visible in shallow relief. Height circa 15cms, width circa 1m, diameter circa 50-100m (not paced)(S5). See also SUT 060 & 061 other small barrows close by.

September 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
A group of five bowl barrows are recorded by the NMR in two separate areas of protection, located near the edge of a south-facing spur. The barrows are visible on Lidar Imagery (S6), circular in plan and of varying size. Three of them are closely spaced on an approximately north-south alignment within the remains of a small plantation. At the southern end of the alignment is the largest of the mounds, and covers an area of approximately 21 metres in diameter. Immediately NNW of this is the second mound. The third lies to the north of the second. All three mounds are thought to be encircled by ditches, but this was unclear from the aerial photographs. The fourth and fifth mounds are recorded by the NMR to the east of the first group, lying just outside the boundary of the plantation (SHER SUT 060 and 061) and have now been incorporated into this record. Both are small in size, relative to the other group. However, it was also possible to discern two further mounds on the Lidar imagery, and these have also been mapped although it is possible that they relate to areas of vegetation.
There appears to be a boundary bank and ditch surrounding the five central barrows (S7) and this has also been mapped, although it may be later in date and may not be contemporary with the barrows. Further activity is visible around the area (S8)-(S9) but this was thought to be related to animal feeding.
