Full description

SOU 623/SOU 234:

[4]: A stone wall was found 20 feet west of another stone wall (monument SH1052). It was five feet thick and was of a similar construction to the other wall. It ran across the line of Winkle Street.

[2]: A stone wall was found of a similar size and construction to another wall (monument SH1052). "Its position continues the line of the west side of the lane Back of the Walls across Winkle Street towards the Museum Offices". A 17th century drain was built against the west side of the wall but was probably of later date (monument SH1046).

IP 19/8/02: A sketch plan in [3] seems to show this wall; the sketch has some unclear locational measurements. There is some confusion in [2] between this wall and the wall to the east (= SH1052) as regards which wall continues the line of the west side of Back of the Walls; in the sketch in [3], the eastern wall continues this line. The sources also refer to a rubble deposit between the two walls (monument SH1042); there is a possibility that the walls and rubble deposit are associated. They may be associated with a tenement on the corner of Winkle Street and Back of the Walls (SH69). (See also SH71.)

(GIS: The approx. position of the stone wall has been marked in the GIS, using [3]. IP 19/8/02)
