Summary

The remains of a rampart bank, built against the west/internal face of the medieval town wall, were revealed during several archaeological investigations along Back of the Walls south of Briton Street in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The rampart was found to have been contemporary with the town wall, and is thought to have been used as a building platform. (It is suggested that this section of the town wall was built in the mid to late 14th century, but before 1373. See separate record.)

[1]: The combined evidence from all the above investigations along Back of the Walls south of Briton Street, together with the documentary evidence for the construction of certain structures along the wall, suggest that the town wall between Briton Street and God's House Tower was built in the mid to late 14th century, but before 1373 (see page 21 for discussion). The remains of the contemporary rampart bank were found in various places against the west/internal face of the town wall. This is thought to have been used as a building platform. In various places, the rampart was overlain by medieval rubbish deposits.
