Summary

The former stable block at the rear of the Fleming Arms was probably built in the mid-19th century. The building was extensively enlarged in the later 20th century, probably when it was converted into a night club. More recently it suffered a fire. An archaeological building survey was carried out on the building in 2006 during reconstruction and refurbishment (SOU 1392). Full description

HER: Outbuilding within the curtilage of the Fleming Arms Public House, a listed building.

SOU 1392 (building recording in 2006):
[1]: The building was probably originally built as a stable block for the Fleming Arms property. No reference to its date of construction has been found. However it was probably built after the construction of the railway in 1839, perhaps when the property was converted to a public house, by 1851 and certainly by 1897. It was built of brick and of two stories. The internal divisions had all been removed, but it is probable that the stalls were at the north end, entered by a single leaf door in the west wall, with a possible tack room at the south end, entered by a double door. This end was heated by a single fireplace. The building was extensively enlarged in the later 20th century, probably when it was converted into a night club. More recently it suffered a fire.
