Summary
There is a small, blocked doorway with a simple pointed arch in the northern town wall between Polymond Tower and York Buildings. It may be a postern gate. Archaeological excavations took place either side of the doorway between 1986 and 1990 (SOU 175 Trenches 11 and 14). In Trench 11, dug against the north/outside of the doorway, the footings of the town wall below the doorway and the sill levels in the doorway were exposed. Trench 14 was dug south of/inside the town wall. When work started, this area was occupied by a raised garden created in the 18th century, and the south side of the doorway was hidden behind the deep dump of deposits associated with this garden. These deposits were removed during the excavation, exposing the doorway, and the sill levels were investigated. No clear dating evidence was found for the construction of the town wall or doorway, although the town wall probably dates to the late 13th century and the excavated evidence may suggest that it was an original feature of the wall. It has been suggested that the doorway could be associated with a mill mentioned in the 1454 terrier.
