Summary

This section of the southern town wall was probably built in the mid 14th century, most likely shortly after 1339. There was a stair leading to the wall-walk somewhere along this section. In 1396 a gate called the Wool Gate is mentioned, apparently somewhere here. The wall was described by Englefield in 1801 as being similar to the town wall east of Watergate. It was demolished in 1803/4 along with the rest of the southern wall and much of Watergate.

Part of the town wall can be seen inside the surviving Watergate monument, where it forms the base of the north wall of the south-west extension to the Watergate drum tower. Here, a chamfered plinth continues through both town wall and drum tower, indicating that they are contemporary (the tower extension was built about 100 years later). This plinth was exposed during archaeological work associated with the restoration of the Watergate in 1963-5 (SOU 659). This is all that survives above ground of this section of the town wall.
