Summary
In the 1454 defence terrier this tower is said to be at the west end of the Long House, a building south of what is now Porters’ Lane. The tower was probably built in the mid 14th century, most likely shortly after 1339, along with the southern town wall. There were three defensive loops in the tower in 1454. The tower is shown on late 18th century maps. Englefield’s 1801 description implies that it was half-round, similar to others further east. It was demolished in 1803/4 along with the southern wall and Watergate. The site of this tower is probably just east of French Street. (Some sources identify this tower as the Wool Bridge Tower, however the 1454 terrier clearly distinguishes between the tower next the Long House and the Wool Bridge Tower, the next tower to the west.)
