Summary

This is part of the southern town wall, probably built in the mid 14th century, most likely shortly after 1339. It was briefly described by Englefield in 1801, before being demolished in 1803/4. A stone wall foundation was exposed during an archaeological watching brief on a trench dug across the junction of Town Quay and French Street in 1993 (SOU 545 Trench 1). This may have been part of the town wall, although was some five metres further north than the supposed “site of the town wall” marked on the 1868 map.
