Full description

SOU 123 (Excavations in the SW corner of the Southampton Castle site in 1973/1974):
[1] in [2], [3]: (SOU 123 Area A). Part of the motte ditch was found on the extreme eastern edge of the site. The western edge of the ditch and about 3m of its width were found, the rest lying under Upper Bugle Street to the east. The lowest deposits encountered contained mid-13th century material. As a complete profile was not obtained, it is not possible to say when the ditch was originally dug. The feature was probably part of the original motte ditch (?late 11th/early 12th century). Negative evidence from an excavation to the east in 1953-4* suggests the ditch was no more than 15m wide at this point.
