Summary

Partial sections were cut through the remains of the castle bank outside the castle bailey wall during archaeological excavations in Albion Place in 1953/4 (SOU 132, Site 3 - Albion Place). Some limited dating evidence was found to suggest the bank was constructed in the 12th century, before the curtain wall.

Full description

SOU 132 (Site 3 Albion Place) (excavations in Albion Place in 1953/4):
[1] in [2]: Partial sections were cut through the castle bank outside the castle bailey wall. Immediately below the bank, on the original ground surface when the bank was constructed, a sherd of 12th century pottery (Norman painted jug) was found. "Pits"/"scoops" of probable 12th century date were found on the slope of the ditch, at the junction of the turf line and bank; at least two of these were below the bank. This suggests the bank was constructed in the 12th century. No mortar was observed below the bank, suggesting that the defences here originally consisted of a rampart, the stone wall being built later. (More details in report.)
