Summary

The inner edge of the castle ditch was observed during an archaeological watching brief on the north corner of Upper Bugle Street and Roman Street in 1959 and 1960 (SOU 145 - Site 1, The castle mound, Trench F, and SOU 609). (Roman Street no longer exists.) (See MSH3403 for parent record for the entire castle motte ditch.)

Full description

SOU 145 (Site 1, The castle mound) (excavation and watching brief at Lansdowne Hill in 1959 and 1960):
[1] in [2] (see also [3]): The inner edge of the castle ditch was observed in Trench F area during the watching brief stage of the work (see figure 54, which shows Trench F and the ditch edge on the NE corner of Upper Bugle Street and Roman Street).

SOU 609 (Watching Brief on Lansdowne Hill between 1960 and 1962):
IP 6/6/97: This site to some extent overlaps with SOU 145 above.
Inner edge of the castle ditch ([4] p180, [5][6]), and a fragment of stone wall ([5][6]), on the corner of Upper Bugle Street and Roman Street.
