Summary

A robber trench was found during an archaeological excavation at Lansdowne Hill in 1959 and 1960 (SOU 145 - Site 1, The castle mound, Trench A). It may have been associated with the curtain wall on the former castle motte. (See MSH3421 for buildings on castle motte.)

Full description

SOU 145 (Site 1, The castle mound) (excavation and watching brief at Lansdowne Hill in 1959 and 1960):
[1] in [2]: A robber trench was found in Trench A (figures 54 & 55). It may have been associated with the motte/curtain wall. The trench was probably robbed in the 17th or 18th century. See figure 54 for suggested line of demolished part of castle curtain wall. (Another robber trench was found in Trench E. See separate record.)
