Full description

SOU 148 (The Castle Site 4) (excavations at Albion Place in 1959/60):
[1] in [2]: Three trenches were dug, two trenches being aligned in order to get a section across the castle ditch from the bailey wall. Another small trench was dug c11m to the southeast, against the bailey wall. Remnants were found of the bank against the bailey wall, surviving to a height of 0.90m. The bank was built of layers of gravel or orange clay (dug from the ditch). There were no clear signs of a berm between the castle bank and the castle ditch. The bank overlay a turf line (see MSH 640). The turf line, bank and ditch contained no close dating evidence, but the bank and ditch are thought to be the castle's earliest defences. (See fig 54 and fig 55.)
