Summary

A stone-lined garderobe was found at the south-east corner of Castle Hall during archaeological excavations between 1973 and 1983 (SOU 123 Area A and SOU 116). The garderobe was in the angle between the east wall of Castle Hall and the south bailey wall of Southampton Castle. Castle Hall, the garderobe and the south bailey wall represent a single period of construction in the late 11th or, more probably, the early-to-mid 12th century.

SOU 123 Area A (UBS II) and part of SOU 116 (excavation and watching brief in 1973/1974 and after):

_ ?Late 11th/early 12th century: A stone building, now known as the Castle Hall, was discovered during this work, along with a stone-lined garderobe (Garderobe 1) in SE corner of the hall, in the angle between the east wall of the hall and the south bailey wall. Castle Hall, Garderobe 1 and the south bailey wall represent a single period of construction. (See source for description of Castle Hall.)
_ 16th to 18th century: Partial demolition, collapse, infilling and levelling of area.
