Full description
SOU 1467 (archaeological watching brief on a gas main from Houndwell Park to Bargate Street in 2008):
[1]: Context 6 was a very dark deposit containing brick fragments, recorded in trench 2 at the NE corner of Houndwell Park (fig 8). It overlay natural gravel. It may have been the fill of a feature. The location coincides approximately with the east side of the former canal, as shown on the 1846 map. Context 6 may therefore have been the backfill of the canal, although if so, its thickness (c0.70m) suggests that it was near the edge of the canal.
