Summary

This section of the town wall may have been built in the mid-14th century, perhaps just after 1339, along with the rest of the southern town wall. In 1801 Englefield noted that the foundations of this part of the wall had the appearance of having slipped outwards from the foot, into the sea. In 1883, Davies noted gun stones in the wall, and the arms of the town under a Tudor moulding, the latter perhaps marking a 16th century rebuild. Today, two lengths of town wall survive above ground here, separated by 19th or 20th century ornamental walling and steps associated with a public garden. At the south end, the length of town wall adjoining the remains of the Corner Tower has the sloping outer face described by Englefield and incorporates two large stone balls – gun stones or from a mangonel?

TOWN WALLS - Sections of wall running south along Esplanade from south-west corner of Simnel Street to University Air Squadron Headquarters at south end of Bugle Street. Includes The Arcades, The West Gate, Blue Anchor Postern and Biddles Gate. (Also listed as: WESTGATE STREET - The West Gate including portions of Town Walls and arcades adjoining.) Grade I.
