Summary
An evaluation excavation took place at the Sun Public House, 84 High Street, in 1994 (SOU 607), followed in 1995/6 by an excavation and watching brief prior to building of Notebeme House (SOU 715). Two stone walls were found on the south side of Winkle Street, probably the same wall of medieval date, aligned southeast-northwest; it is not certain whether it was a boundary wall or building. Various layers and features of medieval date were found. A possible piece of Roman brick was found in a medieval layer. (SOU 607 Phase 2 and SOU 715 Phase 2, excepting the medieval defences, stone wall 495, and stone channel 440, allocated to separate records.)

Full description
[1] SOU 715 T8 (the watching brief): On the south side of Winkle Street, two limestone/mortar walls, contexts 460 and 526, were found. They were probably the same wall, exposed at different depths, wall 460 perhaps being the thicker foundation for wall 526. They were aligned SE-NW. The combined wall was of probable medieval date. It is not certain whether it was a boundary wall or building.
[1] SOU 715 T5, T8: Various layers of medieval date were found. A possible piece of Roman brick was found in medieval layer 203.
[2] SOU 607: Other medieval features and layers were found.
IP 11/4/02: Although the walls and many of the layers were assigned to Phase 2 in [1], it was not proven that they necessarily post-dated the construction of the town walls.
