Summary

In 1986, a watching brief took place on a trench dug in Upper Bugle Street, just west of Castle House (SOU 275 tree pit). A substantial, roughly north-south aligned, mortared stone footing was found. It was overlain by stone and brick rubble. A north-south brick wall footing was also found. The stone wall may be part of the medieval castle.

Full description

SOU 275 (watching brief on three trenches in Upper Bugle Street in 1986):
[1]: The digging of a tree pit was observed; it was dug just west of the Castle House flats in Upper Bugle Street. A substantial, roughly north-south aligned, mortared stone footing was found, overlain by rubble with brick, etc. This was east of and below a north-south brick wall footing. All were below a sequence of 20th century road/pavement surfaces.

([2][4], the other sources for SOU 275, do not mention the tree pit trench.)

SCC HER 2/12/09: The wall may have been part of Southampton Castle. The layout of the castle in this area is very uncertain, although there may have been a barbican in front of the south gate in this area.
