    Full Description

    <1> A detailed building recording programme was carried out before this building was converted to apartments in the late 1990s / early 2000s.
    Four principal stages of development were identified:
    1789-1819 A steam-powere tilt hammer, later converted for use as a rolling mill, was present on the site. No remnants of these were found by the survey;
    1819-1850 The Establishment of James Dixon and Sons Cornish Place Works (originally called the Green Lane Mills but changed to Cornish Place - probably to avoid confusion with the already established Green Lane Works to the east) and their early expansion;
    1851-1862 Major enlargement;
    1862 - 1992 Consolidation, enlargement and eventual closure.

    The firm of Dixon and Smith, based in the Crofts, were electroplaters and Britannia Metal manufacturers. The firm later became James Dixon, (Dixon and Son in 1825), shortly after a move to Green Lane Mills (latterly Cornish Place). The firm manufactured Britannia Metal, cutlery and silverware for over 100 years and exported its goods all over the world [Further detailed information is available from this source].
