NoneFull Description
<1> Medieval home of Wombwell family, large medieval manor house. In 1831 it had been developed into a number of dwellings. No visible remains. 19 10 77 - locally said to be some remnants. References: South Yorkshire 2 1831 p.123-5 (Hunter), Worthies, families and celebrities of Barnsley & the District (c.1880) p.104-7 (including print fac. P.104) (J Wilkinson), Print held by Sheffield City Museum.
<2> The site of this important medieval manor built on a courtyard plan, with a tower house in one range, was inspected by P F Ryder and J Hislop. The medieval house was demolished between 1840 and 1865, except for the lower part of the SW wall of the NE range. Three window openings survive, and other architectural fragments have been re-used in the present Hall, a nineteenth-century house.
<3> Two trenches were opened on the site of the old hall in 1982. Trench 1 across the presumed site of the tower house found it had been thoroughly destroyed, with even its footings dug out. Fragments of moulded plaster were identified in the demolition debris layer; one moulded section has been tentatively dated to 1610-1620. Trench 2, adjacent to the east range, identified a stone flagged area that re-used medieval ashlars. This, in turn, covered a conduit assumed to relate to water supply, which in turn overlay a layer of rough cobbling from which Cistercian Ware pottery was recovered. The pottery report identified that three of the excavated contexts had produced only medieval pottery, the others were more mixed. The majority of the pottery identified was thought to have been produced locally at Rawmarsh and showed a continuous sequence of development from the 12th to the 16th centuries. Whilst the source of the majority of the post-medieval pottery identified is unknown, it is assumed they were also produced locally.
