Full Description

<1> An earthwork 300m north of the village of Blaxton, on a slight hill with excellent views to the north. Described in 1877 as "an inclosure evidently very ancient, at the corner of which we find a little mound surrounded by a ditch" (this rather suggestes a motte and bailey rather than a moat). In 1961 the OS inspector found only fragmentary remains, "the corner of the enclosure bank and part of the outer bank of the moat (approx 1m high) survive, but the central mound has been completley obliterated". The last remains of the earthwork were apparently ploughed out in the early 1970's - when visited (19/6/1980) the field was under crop, all trace of the banks and ditch had been erased, and the trackway that formerly skirted the west and north edges of the site had been re-aligned across it.
