Full Description

Porlei and Porlaa are recorded in Domesday <1><2>. Many later variants of the name include Porleia (1180), Pitlai (1194), Pourle (1297). The name refers to a clearing frequented by the Snipe or Bittern. There were two manors, Great (Magna) and Little (Parva) Purley.
