The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Monument Type(s):
- WELL (Post Medieval to Late 20th century - 1540 AD? to 1973 AD)
Full Description
Well shaft discovered outside the Methodist Chapel in Northbrook Street in 1973. Workmen levelling a path lifted a single slab covering the hole. The brick and mortar lined shaft was approximately 18ft deep and contained 12ft of water. The width of the shaft at the top was quite narrow. No more than a foot and a half in diameter, but widened further down. There is no mention of the well in church records, so it had probably already been covered over before the church was built. After discovery, the well was pumped out and filled with approximately two and a half lorry-loads of gravel <1>.
