The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description

The original parish church of St John the Evangelist was designed by William Butterfield and built in 1860 <1>, but was destroyed by a Second World War bomb. The replacement building was constructed in 1955-57 by the architect S E Dykes-Bower in a neo-Romanesque style, and extended in 1982-3 in a similar style <12>. It is Grade II listed, of red brick with horizontal bands of brick in different shades <4>.

The second church was in fact built within the churchyard of its predecessor and not on the foundations of the bombed building <5>.

The revised Pevsner Architectural Guide describes the new church as 'a learned and poetic design' <7>.

West Berkshire Museum has a photograph showing the church in 1997 <9>.
