The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Location of Second World War munitions factory, demolished in later 20th century

Monument Type(s):

Full Description

Research carried out as part of the Defence of Britain project included information about a munitions factory which was built in the early part of the Second World War on the site of the industrial estate off Brunel Road, Theale <1>. The factory was subsequently demolished, but the housing built for the workers apparently survives in the early 21st century in Blossom Avenue.

A GIS point has been created for the factory based on a building shown on the 5th Epoch Ordnance Survey mapping <2>. A complex of at least a dozen buildings of different shapes and sizes is labelled as 'Factory (Refrigerators)'.

An aerial photograph from 1952 <3> shows the Prestcold refrigerator factory in the foreground and, possibly, the munitions factory in the background as an area of dark single-storey buildings.

A 1981 planning application for the Prestcold Site in Station Road <4> was approved for the demolition of the existing buildings and erection of a new factory and warehouse units including new estate road.
