The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

The City is the name given to a historic area of Newbury centred on St Bartholomew's Hospital, including Argyle Road and Derby Road.

An article by Paul Cannon <2> draws together further sources about The City including the important plan of c1800, probably made by Joseph Toomer <3> and other maps <4><5><6>. The earliest documentary evidence found for the placename was a political poster produced at the time of a Berkshire parliamentary election. A candidate called William Hallett who is named in the poster stood in 1812, 1818 and 1820 so the poster must date from one of these years; the satirical poem is titled 'Almshouses to be disposed of to Freeholders of Bartholomew City' <2>.

Gelling notes that this kind of nickname seems to have been used sarcastically <7>.

An article by Walter Money discusses the election of a 'Mayor' of the City <8>.
