The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Location of metal framed hangar built for USAF Strategic Air Command aircraft in 1952-3, damaged in 1958 and altered in 1980s

Monument Type(s):

Full Description

Building 301 was a pre-fabricated metal-framed hangar (also referred to as Luria Maintenance Hangar no 2). It was similar to the nearby Building 302 but larger, and was associated with the Strategic Air Command 1952 redevelopment of RAF Greenham Common. The building was designed by the Luria Company of Ohio and built in 1952-3.

Building 301 was significantly damaged on 28th February 1958 when a plane in trouble jettisoned two fuel tanks, one of which hit the building. This accident killed two people and injured many others.

The hangar was also altered internally and externally in the 1980s to accommodate two flights <2>. A piece of USAF wall art survived in one of the rooms (and has been removed to RAF Welford?).

The building was recorded prior to demolition <2> <4>.
