The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Building 139 was constructed during the site's initial Cold War base construction in 1951-1953, north-east of the Warehouse Road and Sixth Street junction <1>. It was rectangular in plan, comprised six single storey, pebble-rendered, concrete, east-west aligned, pitched bays, abutted at the east by a long north-south range and fitted as a loading bay centrally to the west. It covered an area of 31,114sq ft. The building allocation table of c.1953 listed its function as Armament & Electronic Admin and Shops. It was used by the supply squadron prior to their move to a purpose-built building, Building 137, in late 1960s. It was converted into a Post Office and also used by the MoD police after they vacated portacabins to the north of the runway in Area A.

It was demolished between 2010 <5> and 2018 <6>.
