The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

This farm is recorded on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1878-79 <1> as noted during a 2005 survey of West Berkshire's historic farmsteads <2>. It is also shown schematically on Rocque's map <3>, although not named.

On the First Edition OS map <1> onwards, the Farm is marked with three buildings arranged in a U-shape around the farmyard. During the Second World War, the Farm became part of Theale Airfield and an aircraft hangar was built in the middle of the farmyard for training pilots <4><5>. After the War, the site was used as a Bic biro factory to make ballpoint pens for the RAF until the factory moved north of Arrowhead Road <4><5>. The buildings had all been demolished by the Sixth Edition map of 1977 <6>.

In 1996, a planning application was approved to decontaminate the site, and create a canal side recreation area and car park <7>.
